Goodness vs. Greatness

Goodness needs Greatness.

Greatness needs Goodness.

Have you ever thought about the difference of these two? Both are required for us to become our best selves (which in turn helps us become higher performers.)

Both goodness and greatness are categories in our life that need to be developed with intention.

Goodness is the evaluation of the essence of our work

Greatness is the evaluation of the quality of our work.

Goodness is WHY you do something

Greatness is HOW you do something.

Our WHY (goodness) depends on our character and integrity. Character can be considered our mentality and personality. Integrity is the honor and strength you can find in yourself.

Character is what we do when nobody is watching.

Integrity is what we say we did when nobody was watching.

Our HOW (greatness) depends on our level of preparation and intention. Preparing to follow through or complete a task doesn’t just happen. It takes time and discipline to prepare for any type of performance (athletic, academic, musical, or theatrical to name a few.)

With clarity on how goodness and greatness are different, how can we use these two ideas to increase our performance and quality of life?

The goodness you identify in your life, the WHY, can propel you to the person you want to become. The goodness we grow will eventually become the legacy we leave behind.

Be POWERED by your WHY.

The greatness you identify in your life, the HOW, needs to be developed with diligent preparation to provide yourself tools to BE the best so you can compete with the best.

The greatness we grow will eventually create the results we want.

These two ideas thrive off of one another. With goodness in the mix, your greatness can elevate. When you achieve greatness, it is accentuated from your foundation of goodness.

We can think of these two ideas as muscles, and both need to be exercised and pushed to grow.

A mentally tough person will reflect, evaluate, and work to change their behavior so they are aligned with the vision of who they want to become.

Ask yourself these questions to evaluate your goodness and greatness:

Why did you do those certain things?

Why did you think in that certain way?

Why are you not doing the things you need to?

Did I do my best?

Did I show up with where I am today?

Did I give all and empty the tank?

How can my WHY power my actions?

Challenging our character is just as important as challenging our abilities. Are you willing to examine your life and do the work to live with your goodness and greatness?
