The Power of Reflection

A skill for amplified growth (that many people skip out on) is reflection

It requires one skill set to complete a tough task - to push yourself at a challenging practice, to muster enough courage for an uncomfortable conversation or to sit in 40 degree Fahrenheit cold water for 4 minutes.

It requires another skill set to have the awareness to REFLECT on your progress after those events happen.

The skill set that separates the “great” to the “elite” is AWARENESS.

When we take time to reflect, it allows us to check back in with our initial intention, identify ways to move forward and evolve into the person we want to become.

The practice of reflection is simple, and it can start with just two questions to ask yourself.

What did I do well?

What can I improve?

Like many things in life, sometimes the most simple practices are the toughest to complete.

In my experience, and looking at the history of all the G.O.A.Ts in the world, doing the simple things well and consistently will yield the best results.

Taking time to consider these two questions are equally paramount.

What did I do well?

This question helps search and identify the areas in which you rocked! It’s important to be proud of yourself and identify the things you did well.

What can I improve?

If answered correctly, this should be an honest evaluation of the weak spots you have. Answering this question helps you focus on what you can work on to become a more well-rounded player/parent/coach/person.

Using this simple reflection practice after training, games, an exam, tough conversation, or any kind of performance can be helpful.

Sometimes we forget to be proud of what we’ve accomplished and also honest with the progress that still needs to be made.

Many are willing to do the work, but not very many are willing to be truly honest with what needs to be done to get better.

I challenge you to incorporate these two simple questions into your post-training and post-game routines to help accelerate growth for the future.
