Forget About Goals - Focus on Systems

It’s time that we forget and burn down our goals.

Hear me out on this one…

Setting goals is not the answer.

The answer is found in what you are willing to sacrifice.

The answer is found in the habits integrated into your daily life.

The answer is found in the discipline you practice to achieve consistency.

So why aren’t we training kids to focus more on their systems versus their goals?

Society tells them (and adults) that we have to set goals to be successful.

Anyone can set a goal, but not everyone is willing to do the work to chase after it.

Every single goal has a required price of admission - it’s an entry fee at the door of success.

What are you willing to sacrifice to become a more resilient human being?

What systems do you need to incorporate to make a true transformation in your life?

What mindset/habit/practice do you need to adopt in order to reach new heights?

Although goals are NOT the answer, it is still critical to identify a “target”.

The target can give a direction and set sights on the end product.

Write it down, talk about it to others, and use mental imagery to plunge the senses into what it would feel like to accomplish it.

After that, what REALLY matters is funneling energy and focus into daily systems and processes.

Setting the goal is fun and exhilarating, but changing daily behavior to create the outcome is the dirty, boring work that requires fierce self-discipline.

Self-discipline is a key ingredient for freedom and actually ACHIEVING goals.

Self-discipline is the ability to complete required tasks, even when a feeling to complete it physically, mentally or emotionally is not present.

Discipline is a choice - practice discipline now… experience freedom later.

Although discipline is not always fun, practicing it daily can be insanely rewarding...eventually.

This is why discipline can be challenging.

We want results right now, as soon as we complete the marginal, daily work.

Achieving greatness comes with years of sacrifice, dedication, and discipline to execute daily systems and processes.

Instead of creating goals, think about creating COMMITMENTS or promises to yourself.

These are the most intimate promises you can make.. and also the easiest one to break.

The feeling of accomplishment can be found in overcoming the struggles and obstacles along the way.

The feeling of accomplishment should not just come at the end of race after you’ve crossed the finish line.

Look to find joy in the process and the act of becoming better as challenges are conquered and you become stronger.

Proving yourself RIGHT, that you CAN do the hard thing and stick with it for an extended period of time is where you can find the answer.

Everything you need, all the answers, are already within you.

Think about this for a moment- the chair you are sitting on, the car you are driving in, the metal box with internet you are using to read this was at one time just an idea *within* someone’s brain.

That idea and the execution of the project required resources outside of oneself, but the idea, process, and execution was created from the spark inside of that person.

You have the same spark. That spark can light the fire to keep you going or can be snuffed out at the first feeling of discomfort.

  • Dream about the possibilities and decide your “target.”

  • Set an achievable DAILY commitment that builds your fortitude to achieve the target.

  • Create a way to track your progress and strive to string together as many days as possible.

  • Be consistent and use self-discipline no matter the conditions.

  • Execute and build your self-trust. Put in the work.

  • Crush your commitments and become someone stronger/faster/wiser/better.

I said it once and I’ll say it again…

Everything you need, all the answers, are already within you.

Forget about the goals. Focus on the systems.
