Becoming More Self-Compassionate

Sometimes our mind is a tough place to be. Whether in the sports arena or not, we tend to be BRUTAL to ourselves when we make a mistake.

We say things to ourselves in our head that we would NEVER say to teammate or friend.

The self-deprecating dialogue in our head can be even more intense if you are a “perfectionist.”

If we want to feel our best, play our best, and increase our quality of life, it requires work!

It starts with setting the intention to build more grace and self-compassion

It ends with reflection and learning more about yourself after events occur.

Before improving ourselves, it’s important to take inventory of where you currently are.

To self-examine the thoughts streaming through your mind, here is a simple process to analyze the current results you are getting in life.

T.E.A.R. Process

Thoughts ➡️ Emotions ➡️ Actions ➡️ Results

The Thoughts we have trigger different Emotions in our body.

Emotions fuel our Actions.

Actions lead to Results.

Here’s how to use this process. You can start at Thoughts or you can start with Results.

This is best done by writing down your observations so your brain can fully process the steps.

If being proactive - start with the desired results you want to achieve and work backwards.

What actions are required to achieve these results?

What emotions could fuel my actions?

What thoughts should I have to create these emotions?

If being reflective - start with the thoughts currently looping in your head. Then go through each step.

What emotions do I feel when I think these thoughts?

What actions do I take?

What are my results?

Are these truly the results I want?

The relationship you create with yourself and your thoughts needs to be nurtured just like any other relationship in your life.

Your self-worth should NOT be determined by the work produced, or the competition you have with others.

Self-worth and compassion is rooted in WHO YOU ARE which is your source of empowerment, resilience, and inner strength.

There is a certain power gained when creating awareness and space between you and your thoughts using the T.E.A.R. Process.

Taking time to break down your thoughts and use this process is simple yet effective.

YOU have the power to control your thoughts and results in your life.

YOU have the power to go from self-critical to self-compassionate.

Invest in yourself and well-being by doing the work required to build your self-compassion!
